Stegra is an industrial impact company with a strong ambition to reduce CO2 emissions in the most fossil-intensive industries. We are building our first facility for large-scale production of green hydrogen, green iron, and green steel in Boden. Founded in 2020 as H2 Green Steel, we changed our name to Stegra in 2024 to better reflect our vision. Lab Technician – DRI Plant
As a Lab Technician at the Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) Plant, you will play a vital role in ensuring quality, environmental compliance, and process optimization through physical and chemical analyses. You will be responsible for sample collection and the analysis of raw materials, gas streams, emissions, and water quality. Your work will directly support safe and efficient operations by providing reliable laboratory data and contributing to the adoption of innovative technologies. You will collaborate closely with the process and technology team, helping to optimize production quality and environmental performance.
Responsibilities:
- Perform timely sample collection and analysis for solid, liquid, and gas samples across various plant areas, using both manual and automated techniques.
- Establish priorities and adhere to schedules for laboratory services, testing, and reporting.
- Analyze physical and chemical properties of raw materials such as iron oxide pellets, HDRI, and HBI products, and support environmental monitoring efforts.
- Operate and maintain DRI laboratory equipment including but not limited to: XRF/D Equipment, Electric Fluxer, Automatic Press for XRD, Leco Carbon/Sulfur Analyzer, Dosimat Titrator, Water analysis tools (pH, TDS, turbidity, thermometer), Gas Chromatograph, Sieve Shaker
- Monitor process gas streams and environmental parameters, ensuring compliance with emissions standards and internal specifications.
- Recognize deviations in lab results and troubleshoot potential root causes such as contamination, equipment failure, or process inconsistencies.
- Conduct pilot experiments and assist in preparing lab demonstrations or technical evaluation materials.
- Maintain accurate records of test results, lab procedures, and sample tracking in the centralized data system.
- Perform minor equipment repairs and coordinate major repairs through proper channels.
- Prepare and manage lab materials including chemical solutions, staining reagents, and sterile media.
- Manage inventory of lab supplies, reagents, and equipment, ensuring proper usage, storage, and safe waste disposal.
- Conduct regular safety and calibration checks on lab machines, with assistance from maintenance teams.
- Adhere strictly to all safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout/Tryout (LOTOTO) and Permit to Work (PTW) procedures during equipment handling.
- Complete all tasks assigned by the manager while meeting internal quality, environmental, and safety requirements.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma in a relevant field is required. A professional diploma in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering is preferred.
- All necessary technical certificates required for lab operations.
- Proficiency in English; Swedish language skills are advantageous.
Experience:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a Quality Control Laboratory within a heavy industry setting such as steel, mining, oil, foundry, or forging.
- Preferred experience in gas-based DRI plant operations and associated lab practices.
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining complex laboratory analysis equipment.
Skills and Attributes:
- Strong understanding of chemistry and metallurgy relevant to DRI operations.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment calibration and maintenance.
- Solid knowledge of lab safety protocols when handling hazardous solids, liquids, and gases.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, maintain focus under pressure, and contribute to a team-based environment.
- Highly detail-oriented, with a commitment to accuracy and documentation integrity.
- Excellent communication skills for sharing technical findings and collaborating across departments.
